Tualatin was officially incorporated on May 8, 1913, according to the Oregon Blue Book. The area was home to the Atfalati (Tualatin) band of the Kalapuya for centuries before white settlement; the Atfalatis used controlled burning to maintain the open agricultural plains that attracted 19th-century EuroAmerican settlers. The community was first called Galbreath in 1853 after pioneer Samuel Galbreath, renamed Bridgeport in 1856 after one of the area’s first bridges across the Tualatin River, and finally renamed Tualatin by John Sweek when he platted the town around the railroad depot in 1886. Thad Sweek (son of John) was the city’s first mayor after incorporation; John Nyberg served as mayor for 26 years starting in 1918.
Downtown Tualatin is approximately 13 miles south of downtown Portland via Interstate 5 North — typically 17-25 minutes depending on rush-hour traffic. I-5 runs directly through Tualatin and is the primary commuter route. Portland International Airport (PDX) is about 20 miles northeast of Tualatin via I-5 N, typically a 30-minute drive.
